About Me

Thanks for stopping by! I’m Stacy, a St. Louis food blogger that loves good food, craft beer, and local farms. That said, I’m still a beginner at this local, natural lifestyle, and I hope to help other beginners be closer to their community and our Earth!

I’ve always been a writer, and this blog is helping me find my roots in writing. I’ve also always been a foodie (who knew an obsession with food was a positive thing?!), but in my recent years, I’ve figured out what kinds of foods my body wants, enjoys, and needs. I’ve been experimenting and learning how to treat my body the way it’s supposed to be treated! Here are some blog entries that describe me:

I’ve recently taken an interest in local, sustainable food and have been working to purchase and consume foods found within 100 miles of St. Louis, as well as supporting local restaurants that use food from local farms and give back to our community. St. Louis has an amazing food culture and I’m trying to experience as much of it as possible.

Let me tell you a bit about my background.

I grew up in Metro Detroit, Michigan and attended the University of Michigan for undergrad (GO BLUE!), while majoring in journalism. Post-graduation, I spent some time living in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Lynchburg, Virginia, where I began my Social Work career and learned a bit about myself.

In 2006, I made a major change in my life. I moved back to Michigan and started graduate school. I enrolled in a Master’s of Social Work program with Wayne State University in Detroit and spent the next three years studying my butt off! I also came out of my comfort zone and started trying things I’ve never tried before. 2006 to 2009 were big years for me; kind of my coming out party.

In 2009, I met a wonderful man that shares my love for music, travel, and being dorky, and one year later, I moved into his new house in Metro St. Louis (technically, we live in Southern Illinois). We are having a wonderful time figuring out how to cook chicken in a million different ways and playing rock, paper, scissors for who gets to change the laundry. It’s a blast!

I currently hold a Master’s Degree in Social Work, and a Master’s License in the state of Missouri. I am particularly interested in the field of Autism and developmental disabilities. I have worked in a variety of settings with children and adolescents with special needs, and have used techniques in behavior, play, and speech therapies. I currently provide behavior therapy for children with Autism and their families.

I’m still learning, but hopefully you’ll enjoy helping me through the process!

St. Louis

Though not a native, I’m still in love with St. Louis. The citizens, the food culture, the “small town in a big city” feel – these things and more made me feel at home and like I was part of something bigger than myself.

Since my move to St. Louis in September 2010, I’ve been fortunate to be a part of some amazing local events, recorded here:

I also volunteer for Slow Food St. Louis, an amazingly active organization that promotes local and sustainable food. We’ve had some extremely informative and fun events recently:

Because this city offers so many quality restaurant choices, I’ve started a new blog series to highlight the best restaurant recipes. Eating Through St. Louis chronicles my discovery of the best restaurants and food that St. Louis has to offer:

7 Links and Peach Shortcake

For your Monday enjoyment, I present to you this fun blog survey that’s been going around, 7 Links. I was tagged by Hangry Pants and at the end of this post, I’ve tagged a few of you!

(The rules are here!)

Also, don’t forget to check out my post from yesterday – lots of food in that one!

1. Most Beautiful

While I’ve taken a lot of beautiful food photos (mostly by accident, with a lot of good lighting!), I think my most beautiful post comes in canine form: An Ode to Roxie. This dog means a lot to me and this post was certainly from the heart!

2. Most Popular

By farrrr, my most popular post is one I did before I even started food blogging! If you’ve ever been to Alpine Valley Music Theatre outside Milwaukee, Wisconsin, you’ll remember that it’s basically in the middle of nowhere. When I started traveling there regularly to see Phish and DMB shows, I put together this informational post about campgrounds and outlying cities. I try and update it regularly but hopefully it has helped some people!

My most popular recipe post is this Snowy Lentil Turkey Chili, – Whole Foods retweeted it so you can see why it got a ton of hits!

3. Most Controversial

I tend to stay away from most controversial topics here on the blog, not necessarily on purpose but more so because I’m so focused on food that I forget to interject thought-provoking blog posts here and there!

One post that does stand out for me as being not so much controversial as debate-inspiring is my “Is Subway Fast Food?” post. There were some great comments – what do you think? (photo source)

4. Most Helpful

I try and throw plenty of everyday tips into my posts but one topic I wrote about that appeared most helpful to others was a two-post series on bulk bins. Bulk bins can be really intimidating for those first stepping into a more natural lifestyle (they definitely were for me!) so I thought the info might those that shied away from bins.

5. Not Enough Attention

I posted this entry not so long ago about what it means to be a “foodie” vs. an “avid eater.” The post was inspired by Eat, Move, Write and I wanted to express my own thoughts on the matter. It did receive comments but I had hoped to possibly hear more opinion and debate. Either way, it’s a topic worth revisiting! (photo source)

6. Surprise Success

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that this post was a success – I mean, it’s flippin’ macaroni and cheese! And trust me, it was good. But for the amount of views this post has, you’d think it was the next Food Network Star.

Which is OK, because it deserves it :) Mexican Mac and Cheese!

7. Most Proud

It wasn’t any grand writing, or any brilliant photography, that created the post that I’m most proud of. It was more the moment in which it was posted. It was my first food post ever and the entry that really propelled this blog into a food blog. Before this post, it was very much a mishmash of my life. When I posted this recipe, I just knew – that was the direction my blog was supposed to take!

For your reading pleasure: Pumpkin Spice!

Hope you enjoyed a look back through Every Little Thing – see who I nominated for 7 Links at the end of this post!

So I keep buying peaches at the market but I’m never sure what to do with them. There’s plenty of peach desserts to make but I’m not a baker, so they all seem like too much work.

Until I thought about shortcake.

Strawberry shortcake is amazing, so why wouldn’t peach shortcake be just as good?

Well, it is. Just so you know.

I layered angel food cake, peaches, vanilla bean ice cream, more peaches, honey drizzles, whipped cream, and one last peach slice on top.

It was fantastic. We ate these at 3 in the afternoon and licked our plates clean. Go! Make these now!

I nominate the following blogs for this 7 Links survey!  You don’t have to do it, but feel free to try it out!

Have a great Monday!

Question: What’s your favorite peachy dessert?
