To continue the holiday theme, I have an awesome homemade gift that is remarkably easy and will impress even the most picky relatives.
This lemon sugar hand scrub is great for anyone who works hard in the kitchen…or the garden, or the garage, or the crafting table!
The scrub consists of:
- granulated sugar
- lemon juice
- lemon zest
- oil (olive or canola, see note below)
You can find the proportions here, where I found the original recipe.
A couple of notes – I used canola oil instead of olive, as the smell wasn’t quite as overwhelming. Also, I added the lemon zest to really add a lemony punch (I thought the lemon smell was too muted as is).
I also used 16 ounce, wide mouth Ball jars, and I think they worked well.
The perfect gift to brighten anyone’s day.
I bought bamboo teaspoons from Amazon ($10 for 10, so only about $1/each!) and tied a spoon on each bottle.
I also plan to make small tags to hang off each jar.
You could really add any scent – we just got a bunch of oranges, so maybe I’ll try an orange version next.
Happy Friday!
Question: Have you ever made homemade gifts? What was your favorite to give (or receive)?

I saw the proportions – but how much lemon zest do you add?
I think I just eye-balled it. Maybe go with the zest of one lemon per batch?
OK. I wonder if I could use the lemon zest you get in the spice aisle instead of grating the peel myself? Thoughts?
I don’t think the smell would be as prevalent, but I suppose they would work in a pinch. Plus it’s way cheaper to buy the actual lemon
OK, I just wondered since I already had some on hand. Thanks!
