Labor Day weekend! I hope you all have had a chance to relax and eat a good meal. Hurricane Isaac didn’t hit us nearly as hard as expected but it was still quite the rainy weekend. However, we’re grilling tonight (rain or shine), and using a ton of our CSA ingredients from this week.
Yes, this is the week of elephant garlic! Elephant garlic is not only humongous, but also a milder version of your typical garlic clove. Did you know that elephant garlic isn’t true garlic? It’s actually more closely related to leeks!
Also, did I mention it’s huge? Like, baseball-sized.
We’re using the garlic tonight in Alton Brown’s garlic mashed, which I’ll post about later. We’re also making a crazy good watermelon salad, like this watermelon and orange salad I made last year.
The rest of our CSA box included:
- potatoes
- carrots
- sweet peppers
- red watermelon (the last of the season, sadface)
- zucchini
- summer squash
- curly kale (surprise!)
STILL getting zukes and squash. Regardless, I have found these late summer boxes the easiest to process! Watermelon, sweet peppers, garlic – all require little to no preparation. Love it!
I’ll be back with our Labor Day fixin’s soon. Have a great day!
What do you do when you’re overloaded with garlic? We use it in everything but it just keeps piling up, and I can only roast so many. Any creative ways to use it?

Last year I was overrun with garlic, so I made a garlic butter, a garlic and onion jam, and garlic infused olive oil. They were all pretty easy, and best of all, they made awesome gifts!
Good ideas! One of the farmers told us they are cured so they will last all winter in our pantry, which thrills me!
