January Things

I’m just not sure we need any more weather this winter. Yep, weather. All inclusive. It snowed a couple inches last night but somehow, a thin layer of ice snuck underneath and wreaked havoc on the entire morning commute.

No. More. Weather.

(and I’m from Michigan, so I know weather. We have a long-term, love/hate relationship).

So while I’m crying over weather that I celebrated a mere two days ago when it was 50 degrees (told you it was love/hate), here’s what I’m loving in January:

@ OATMEAL. Maybe the most boring obsession yet but I finally found the right combo of oats and milk and am in love (1/2 cup quick cooking oats, 1 cup soy/almond milk). Though I’ve weaned myself off the amount of brown sugar featured in the above picture (seriously, I could go half cup brown sugar on this monster), I’m still searching for add-ins that I like. Today I tried a teaspoon of brown sugar with a tablespoon of crushed walnuts and salt. It was OK. Not sure how I feel about fruit, so you all need to tell me what you mix in! I need inspiration.

@ Have you gotten yourself a 2014 planner? I did, and I adore it. The Whitney English Day Designer is more a life planner then a day planner. There is a page for every day of the year, and each page has a schedule AND room for a to-do list, among other unique and inspiring categories (daily download, what’s for dinner, what’s due, daily gratitude, etc).


@ One of my favorite Christmas gifts was this Life Factory glass water bottle. You know how people say that water tastes better from a glass bottle, and you’re all “yeah, right, this person has nothing else to worry about then how her water tastes out of a bottle?” Well, I’m here to tell you – I might be crazy but it’s true. The water tastes more crisp and even more fresh. Downside? Yes, it’s heavy. But so was my giant Nalgene bottle, and this one sweats way less and suctions way better.

@ Why can’t I start every morning with this tomato-poached egg dish from Not Without Salt? Life isn’t fair.

@ Speaking of unfair lives, these white chocolate raspberry tarts made in freaking mason jar lids. I mean, come ON. My most creative meal this week was the above-mentioned oatmeal…

@ Nuts? Yep. I received these nut mixes from SunRidge Farms and they’re a basic mix, yet seem to be the perfect combo of everything you want – a little chocolate, a few nuts, a few seeds. Have you seen these around your local stores? I haven’t, but wish I did!

@ Know what totchos are? Basically, nachos with tater tots instead of chips. I WANT.

    also i order the whitney english planner and i am constantly checking etsy to see if it shipped even though i know it’s not supposed to ship until late february. so much anticipation!!

  2. Stacy, I always use the whole oats. MY recipe for my oatmeal breakfast: 1 cup of water, 1/2 of frozen cranberries, add some nuts such as walnuts, slices almonds, or pecans or even pumpkin seeds. Bring to a boil until the cranberries pop open, Next I add some cinnamon and /2 teaspoon of cocoa. Cook for about 5 minutes, Then I add some berries such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, or a combination. Sweeten with honey, agave, tuvia, what ever you like, Then I add some mike such as almond or soy or whatever i have, Sometimes I will top it off with some Greek yogurt, YumYum, This is good for 2 portions and you can half one day the use it the next day, Mike

  3. I have a hard time enjoying oatmeal, but I try to put some cinnamon on mine! Nothing too fancy, but it helps with the flavor :).

    And I don’t have any day planner suggestions, but I appreciate yours! I have been on the lookout for one for this year, and haven’t found one yet I’ve liked! I like the one that you’ve shared with us!

    • Thanks for the comment Ashley! Isn’t it funny how particular we are with planners? They need to be just right, or risk wasted time and money – the last thing we want with a planner (literally)!

  4. Love this post! I actually have am oatmeal post on my blog. It’s such an easy breakfast can make for their kids. And you can really mix up the grains and the flavors!
